Casper David Friedrich (1774-1880) was considered the most important landscape painter of his day. He was part of the 19th German Romantic movement. He is best known for best known for his allegorical landscapes which feature individuals lost in thought. Wanderer above the Sea of Fog (1818) depicts a man alone atop a mountain peak above the clouds. It is your job (and that of your guests) to try and imagine what was going through his head.
